Vancouver Cantonese Opera
“Keeping the Tradition Alive”
Cantonese opera (粵劇) is one of the major categories in Chinese opera, originating in southern China’s Guangdong Province. It is a traditional Chinese art form, involving music, singing, martial arts, acrobatics, and acting.
The Vancouver Cantonese Opera is a non-profit society incorporated on June 30th, 2000. Our mission is to preserve and promote Cantonese opera in Canada. We endeavor to present the unique traditional art form of Cantonese opera at the highest level to both Chinese and non-Chinese audience. We also strive to collaborate with our stakeholders to meet the fundamental need for spiritual and aesthetic satisfaction and richness in our lives.
On February, 23rd, Canada Revenue Agency designated Vancouver Cantonese Opera as a charitable organisation. On November 28th, 2007, the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Committee invited Vancouver Cantonese Opera to be one of their partners in the 2008 Cultural Olympiad.
