Workshop #3: How to Appreciate Chinese Opera – duration: 3 hours

This three-hour workshop provides an opportunity for people to explore the art of Cantonese Opera, and it serves as valuable community outreach tool to build audience awareness/appreciation for the art form.

In the first two hours of this three-hour workshop, community members will be invited to meet the performers who will share their entire process of Chinese opera makeup. They will go through the intricate details of the Cantonese opera’s signature make-up application, the significance of each hairpiece, the costumes, character significance and specific behind-the-scenes preparations.

In the second part of the workshop, participants will learn about the history of Chinese opera. There will be demonstration of basic performance techniques, meaning of miming and gestures, special performance techniques such as watersleeves, how to ride a horse on stage.

In the last part of the workshop, there will be a short performance of a Cantonese opera repertoire in full makeup and costume.
