Terry Hunter

A resident of Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside since 1975, Mr. Hunter is Co-founder and Executive Director of Vancouver Moving Theatre (established 1983), and Co-founder and Artistic Producer of the Downtown Eastside Heart of the City Festival (established 2004). Over his 45 year career, Mr. Hunter has produced numerous groundbreaking community-engaged artistic events, including the DTES Community Play (2003), Survivors Pole Raising Ceremony (2017), and the national tour of Weaving Reconciliation Our Way (2018). Mr. Hunter was Co-Vice Chair of the CoV Arts and Cultural Policy Council (2017-18), and a member of Vancouver Foundation Arts Advisory; Artscape Keefer Chinatown Advisory. He is currently a Vancouver City Council-appointed member of the Chinatown Transformation Legacy Stewardship Group. Mr. Hunter is co-recipient of: Jessie Richardson Award for Significant Artistic Achievement in Spectacle Design (1998); BC Community Achievement Award (2008); CoV Mayor’s Award (2009, Community Arts); and the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal (2013) for contributions to Canadian culture. In 2021, Mr. Hunter was adopted into the St'langng Laanas clan of the Haida Nation by Hereditary Chief in Waiting Bernie Skundaal Williams and Elder Maureen Brown, and honoured with the name Nang Gulgaa (Industrious One).
